Learn To Skate
Over the years, perhaps a thousand or more kids have learned to skate with the Swansea Hockey Association. More than a few parents have also seen their skating improve at the same time.
We run a loosely organized instructional program led by volunteers. The children learn, with their parents' assistance, to feel comfortable moving around on the ice. This program runs on Saturday mornings at 11am and 12 noon. Depending on the demand, we may offer a third session at 1pm.
Unless a session time was specifically requested or it is multiple siblings, we try and put most 3 and 4-year-olds in the 11am time slot and the 5 and 6-year-olds in the 12noon slot.
The Learn to Skate program is for ages 3 - 6 and requires skates, kneepads, and a CSA-approved helmet with a face mask. Swansea Hockey provides a jersey. On-ice Parent volunteers are encouraged. All on-ice parent volunteers must wear CSA-approved hockey helmet.
Our Learn to Skate program will begin on Saturday, November 25, 2023 with a check-in to receive the jersey and socks. The first time on the ice will be Saturday, December 2, 2023 at your designated time. Our final skate will be Saturday, February 24, 2024. Our year-end awards banquet will be on Sunday, February 25, 2024.
EMAIL WILL BE SENT OUT MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER TO ALL REGISTERED PLAYERS WITH THE PROGRAM DETAILS AND YOUR CHILD`S SESSION TIME.
The cost of the program for 2023/2024 is $120.00
Learn To Play Hockey
This program is a natural progression from our Learn To Skate program. Players aged 5 & 6 are introduced to hockey and skating drills under the guidance of parent volunteers. Basic skating skills are required for this program. 7-year-olds should be registered in our novice division hockey House League program allowing them be in a more structured environment to play hockey with their friends and peers.
Typically, the sessions end with an informal game or two.
This program will run on Saturdays at 1:00 pm (with a possible second session added at 2pm, if the demand is there)
This program requires full hockey equipment including skates, shin pads, hockey pants, jock or jill strap, elbow pads, shoulder pads, hockey helmet with facemask, BNQ or CSA approved neck guard, hockey gloves, and a stick. Jersey and socks are provided by the league.

For players ages 7 to 17, we offer a house league hockey program with one or two games a week culminating with playoffs in late February before the ice melts. Our 2023-2024 season will start on Saturday, December 2, 2023 and conclude with the Finals on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Our year-end awards banquet will be on Sunday, February 25, 2024.
Please see the FAQ for typical game times based on previous years. But each year can be slightly different depending on the number of teams in each division.
For our younger house league players in the Novice, Minor Atom and Atom divisions, we play 3-minute shifts where play stops during the shift changes but the clock keeps running. For our Peewee division, shift changes can occur at any time.
Our Novice division will follow Hockey Canada's lead and introduce half-ice play. This format makes the ice size and net size more appropriate for younger players allowing all players to be more involved in the action. Two volunteer parent coaches are needed for each team.
For Minor Atom, Atom, Peewee, and Bantam divisions, we require 3 volunteer parent coaches per team.
Please make sure that you check off coaching on your child's registration if you are interested in helping out.
Our House League program requires full hockey equipment including a hockey helmet, face mask, shin pads, hockey pants, elbow pads, shoulder pads, jock or jill strap, and BNQ or CSA-approved neck guard. We will provide goalie equipment for all teams. Jersey and socks are provided by the league.
Please note that we cannot accept registrations from A, AA, AAA, or Junior players.
The cost of the house league program for 2023-2024 is $140.00
